Noel Gallagher Plays Heartfelt Tribute To Caroline Aherne

Noel Gallagher has played a heartfelt tribute to his friend Caroline Aherne during a concert in America.

Aherne died at her home in Timperley, Greater Manchester, on Saturday, after a battle with lung cancer.

The former Oasis frontman only discovered The Royle Family star had died moments before he took to the stage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

He sung a moving version of the sitcom's theme tune - the 1994 hit Half the World Away - in her memory.

He told the crowd: "I want to dedicate the next song to a friend of mine who died this afternoon".

He added: "Her name was Caroline and she was a very, very, very funny woman.

"She used this next song on a very, very, very, very brilliant sitcom in England called The Royle Family."

He finished by saying: "So, wherever you are", and pointing heavenward, before launching into the song.

Earlier in the day he posted a picture of Aherne on his Instagram account, adding "my god you made us laugh!"
