Noel To Headline Versus Cancer

Oasis star Noel Gallagher is to headline the Manchester charity gig Versus Cancer, the M.E.N. can reveal.

He will perform a semi-acoustic set and appear with special guests at the M.E.N. Arena on March 30.

Organisers, who have lined up some of the north west's biggest bands in a bid to raise £1m to fight cancer, were today releasing extra tickets to cope with the expected surge in demand.

The star-studded line-up also includes Paul Weller, Ian Brown, The Charlatans and Echo and the Bunnymen.

Proceeds from the concert, organised by The Smiths' Andy Rourke and his charity the Great Northern Aid Trust, will go towards cancer research and awareness.

Manchester's specialist cancer hospital, the Christie, will be one of the main beneficiaries.

Andy said: "Noel has supported us from the start, donating a guitar at last year's concert as he was unable to play due to touring commitments. We are delighted he offered to play for us this year. It is amazing to have so many icons on the same stage.

"I almost wish I was in the audience and not on stage, it is going to be a great night."

Also playing are Andy Rourke, Peter Hook, from New Order, Mani of Primal Scream and the Stone Roses, Bernard Butler and David McAlmont, from McAlmont and Butler, Primal Scream vocalist Denise Johnson, and former Oasis member Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs with his new band.

Icing on the cake

Christie chief executive Caroline Shaw said: "Noel Gallagher is the icing on the cake. He is an international star and a local lad so it could not be more perfect.

"It is great he is supporting such an important charity event in his home town."

Versus Cancer takes place on Friday, March 30. Tickets are £40. Call the Box Office on 0870 060 1768 to book or click here . For more information on Versus Cancer, go online to: www.versuscancer.org and also log on to the website www.greatnorthernaidtrust.org/.
